When I was 10 years old, my father abandoned my mother. He packed up everything we owned, ordered his four children into the car, and fled.

When we lived on the Navajo Indian Reservation in the 1960s, Mr. Rex Kontz was Fort Defiance’s postmaster. He was also my surrogate father.
